Spotlight on ETF Splits

As we wind down from earnings season, in addition to monitoring earnings-related events, there are many corporate events to keep a close watch on such as dividends that can affect volatility.

Wall Street Horizon tracks a range of event data from earnings and dividend dates to stock splits and mergers and acquisitions. With ETF investing grabbing an increasingly bigger chunk of the market recently, we would be remiss if we did not take a closer look at ETF distributions along with the status of record date, ex-date, dividend date as well as splits.

Wall Street Horizon covers over 2,000 US ETFs and has observed an increase in both ETF splits and reverse splits. ETFs have proven to be yet another investment type to consider in your trading and risk barometer when examining the financial health of the issuing company.

As the above graph indicates, Wall Street Horizon is reporting a significant increase in ETF splits from Q2 2019 to Q2 2020 to date (data as of 5/19/20).

In addition, Wall Street Horizon has seen a notable increase in ETF reverse splits, reporting 71% reverse splits in 2019 and 95% reverse splits to date in 2020. Many providers implement reverse splits to drive up the price and avoid de-listing, therefore, it is important to keep in mind especially for risk strategies.
